Night Gardener, a soulful documentary directed by Daniel Gough, has been selected for the prestigious BFI London Film Festival's Works-in-Progress Showcase. This event, which is part of the festival's UK Talent Days, will be held on Saturday, 12th of October. It will feature nine promising new UK feature films and documentaries.
The film, produced by Anne Milne, Sonja Henrici, and Dewi Gregory, is a deeply personal exploration of the complex relationship between a young filmmaker and his father, an ICU doctor. At the heart of Night Gardener is a haunting story that has followed the director since childhood. As a boy, Daniel was deeply affected by his father's account of a man's suicide by stabbing himself in the heart. Years later, hoping to reconnect and capture this haunting tale, he visits his estranged father in a dilapidated cottage. The request to revisit the story abruptly ends their meeting — the last time they stayed together as father and son under the same roof before his father’s mental breakdown, institutionalisation, and death.
Mystified by questions surrounding his father’s fate, Daniel faces family resistance as he digs deeper. He becomes obsessed, compulsively drawing and animating memories, fairy tales, and stories, desperately seeking meaning in his father’s words. His quest expands to explore the broader struggles of doctors and the crumbling healthcare system. Dealing with his father’s legacy, Daniel fears their similarities and yearns to forge his own path. Through his journey, he discovers stories’ power to both wound and heal.
I like films to portray reality but with the heart of a child, allowing things to still mystify and spark imagination. This film combines two of my favourite disciplines - film and drawing. I want to take the darkness of these stories and transform them through my art into something meaningful, hopeful and beautiful.
Daniel Gough, Director
Dan’s project continually gives me goosebumps. It’s an unfolding story and his hybrid documentary approach with powerful animation at the centre is incredible. I can’t wait to share more about the film and to find new fans and partners.
Sonja Henrici, Producer
When stories of institutional trauma and mental health issues are told within an intimate family story, the impact is much more powerful. They become universal.
Anne Milne, Producer
Night Gardener is a collaborative effort between Hand-Drawn Pictures, Sonja Henrici Creates, and Truth Department. The project has received support from Screen Scotland and Ffilm Cymru Wales.
